My low vision is created the combination of four elements that together produce how I see. A medical evaluation and assessment by social services is needed to determine how each person with low vision sees, and how best to help them.
Color Blindness - Tritanopia
I see the image on the left (average full view) and right (tritanopia view) as the same image.
Also known as "Blue-Yellow” color blindness
Colors lose distinction and brightness (Blue / Green, Red / Purple, Yellow / Pink).
I am told the large flower on the right looks pink, and on the left it is yellow and orange. The smaller red flowers at the top and bottom look less red. And the "Greenery" is blue/gray - dead looking, but to me it is an image of lush vibrant green as that is all I have ever known or been told.
Dimming
The image on the left is how a person with full vision would see the scene
The image on the right shows how my vision dims even bright scenes
60% dimming in well lit scenes
90-95% dimming in medium lit scenes
Little to no vision in low lit and dark scenes
Dots (Floaters)
I see dots throughout my vision
Brightly lit areas - gray, less dense
Medium lit - darker gray, more dense
Dimly lit - black, very dense
Expanded view of dots
Donuts (Acute Central Ring Scatoma)
The donut, splits my vision into three areas
The circle in the middle, the donut hole, has my central vision
My best vision is the center circle inside the donut
The ring around the central vision is the middle periferal
I have no vision in the middle ring / the middle periferal / the donut
I have some far peripheral vision around the area of the donut
I perceive me entire field of view as if I can see, very limited, but no missing areas
My brain fills in the donut with inaccurate information from the other flawed areas of my vision
Combine to form my low vision
Below, the image on the left shows the scene as it would look for a person with average full vision
The image on the right shows the layers of my vision combined
Overall, objects merge together without clear definition
My brain turns them into other things to make sense of the scene
Looking at a very bright computer screen or smartphone helps
The center circle of vision, my central vision, becomes much less dim and has less dots even though my vision is still very low compared to average full vision I see significantly better compared to what I see with my eyes alone. The central vision, becomes much more like the image on the left. Brighter, more contrast, less dots - it is an amazing change for me
